    A joke is a kind of a Zen thing..

    and what I mean by that is

    beyond the trappings of the situation involved

    and inherent in it’s basic structure

    Comedy hinges on a sudden realization

    that involves a shift in perspective..

    In just such a way the formula for a successful joke

    brings a person to that momentary transition

    from our normal time bound mental state

    to a state of being presently consciousness

     this explains why we enjoy them so very much…

     If the joke is good, our illusionary identifications become transparent….

     and for that often brief moment

    we are suddenly free of them

     and laughter then flows spontaneously and quite naturally…

    its often quite a trick to remember a good joke

    If you cant clearly summon the perspective of presence upon which the joke pivots

     the telling of the joke may result in a chuckle or two

    but don’t expect a belly laugh

    and that’s ok…

    our comics need the employment opportunities

    “Belief” is always a good topic for the comic

    because belief itself has always been

    a huge joke playing itself out on the human race

     As you look around the world

    and see all those thoughtful beliefs in operation

     it is obvious to the point of  hysterical insanity…

     People have totally lost their since of humor!

    LL

    Lewis, however seems to understand this quite well

    In this one next tube…

     Lewis demonstrates how

    a present moment experience can

    exceed the illusion of expectation  born of our “beliefs”

    I often wonder …

    Are not our comedians  as a group

    the most sane people in our culture today?

    well maybe not

  • I love a good joke as well as the next guy does.

    If you dont listen to well you miss the meaning of the joke.

    Most of them are funny.

  • This post is fantastic! No joke!

    :giggle:

  • I actually like George Bush’s stand up. Unfortunately he’s doing stand up better than policies (at least i think most of the time). I think he’s not writing his stand up though probably some guy in the back trying to make him look personable so that people will connect and like him as a president… putting out a good happy and joking personality you know? I like stand up though. Although I usually don’t like Lewis these are some good bits. I like the first one better than the end of the world.

  • Interesting perspective, Doug. I apprecate it. Especially since I’d just written to my wife this morning that comedians are our modern day prophets. I see humor as the collision of contradictions. The best comedian can lead us down the path of our own contradictions without us knowing where we’re going. We go trusting and unaware. Then, BAM! The punchline and we’re brought face to face with a huge contradiction. What to do? It’s better to laugh than cry so we laugh. The bigger the contradiction the bigger the laugh. Yep, without comedians I’m pretty sure most Americans wouldn’t know truth if it chewed on their asses for half an hour. I don’t know about the rest of the world or I’d include them. Being an American I know us better. *smile* Comedians make the truth of our condition more palatable.

  • You have a point with reference to the President who has a keen sense of the absurd and a stubborn determination to ignor it.Your observations about humor ring true..I remember how george Carlin ,especially in his youth delivered a good bit of bite as he made us laugh.

  • Hi :)

    Any mystic that would allow others to refer to him as a perfect master….should have an ego check up and go back to private meditation.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    No Mystic has ever claimed himself as the perfect Master, only upon their death, do people like us give this adjective – Jesus, Guru Nanek, Rumi, Socrates, Tau, Rai Das Maharaj, Propher Mohammad were some of the perfect Masters that blessed us in their own time.
    Mystics never reveal themselves, neither do they advertise!!! I will be mentioning something about Mystics in my next Blog
    Peace
  • tout à fait magnifique
    :)
  • RYC,I find blogging a weirdly fascinating phenomena .I can imagine all kinds of sociological studies being churned out like so much sausage in a meat plant.It remains an evolving community and over time I hope ,(like you have alluded to) that it will become less about masses of people all stating emphatically “I am here and here is what I am about” and more a place where the shared focus is ideas that can be bounced around and fine tuned..scoffed at and embraced.I know I feel sheepish at times when I post and realize I am offering up a ” Me look at Me!”sign instead of an idea.I am curious about how blogging will evolve ,and even more interested about what will happen if it ,and the net as a whole become a significant threat to those who would want to direct public thought as if it were a highschool band. I think of blogging as a place where non comformist can actually be heard….I am most definately not into volume readership but quality relationships and content online.
  • It has often been said that the humor of one culture is not necessarily apparent to another. I find many things funny, but not necessarily what “normal” people think is humorous. In fact, most people have no idea what I’m laughing about most of the time. It’s no longer an issue of interculture humor when subcultures within a country can’t even share a joke.
    About the only thing people can agree to laugh at is the government, and half the time it’s to keep from crying.
    Wow… I didn’t mean this post to become half so depressing as it’s become. Sorry!
  •  harmony is great to read from you again!
    :sunny:
  • heh… hopefully I’ll be around more… but I’ve said that before. :wink:
  • hoping you are well my friend … :sunny: :wave:
  • in medieval times, the court jester were often relied upon to tell the king the truth. it is a practice i have thought needs to be reinstated. unfortunately, there are fools of another sort supporting king george now….
  • Thanks…good post..talk soon..((Wings)):wave:
  • Jokes are good … for there is always truth in them. So why do we find the truth so funny?
  • A GOOD joke is not as zennish:coolman:
  • The middle video’s is no longer available – loved the other two.
