This is exciting to watch
…from a distance
kinda charges me up to watch this
but i am easily amused …
like on last saturday night
This is a large lab grown quartz crystal
this is what happens if you rub two of them together
in total darkness…
you get a piezoelectric effect
like this
sparks fly..
The piezoelectric effect happens when mechanical force is applied ..
the crystal generates electricity.
I was rubbing these together quite intensely…
this is not something i could even considering doing with a
‘naturally’ grown crystal
which is why i got these…
to play with
If you look closely you can see the spec’s of the crystal written on the back
this one has a resonance in the range of 1600-1750. What that means is .. if you apply an alternating voltage to these crystals, it will cause the quartz to vibrate, or oscillate, at a particular frequency. The frequency is a function of the thickness and shape of the crystal. By carefully polishing a crystal, it can be made to oscillate at any frequency. Quartz crystals are basically used for stabilizing radio frequencies
The voltage made some strange light indeed
curious how it came out

Nifty.
what a huge crystal too…
That video is electrifying!
geez, thanks, mr wizard
i’ll be back to look at the video
when you rub them together and get that luminescence, its called Triboluminescence. when you bang them or aplly pressure to a waffer, then you get a spark and thats Piezoelectric. (You should see the light show digging with the track hoe after dark. Way cool.) And the frequency is obtained by sliceing the crystal into thin waffers. The angle of the splice determines the frequency or range of oscillation. A waffer cut at 90 deg. oscillates at a different frequency than one cut at 45 deg. or 46 deg. etc. But an electric charge must be applied. That man made’s cool, huh. I sell a bunch of it for cutting triplets and doubles. Amazing they grow it in a lab to our size specs in like 30 days.
Man, where do you find all this stuff? Yeah, that crystal is quite impressive. Awesome, in fact.
sparks fly. mmm when u rub two together :spinning: how well i know this on another level all together lol same principal eh?
Curiouser and curiouser … :fun:
Beautiful Post!!!:):sunny::) (((Hugs!)))
That Video Is My All Time Favorite Short Clip… I Would Love To Hear What They had To
Say After The SHOCK of That Discharge… I’ll Bet the Laundry Needed Done A.S.A.P.
And That Crystal is Just a Bit More Than Wow… Gotta Love It…!!! Makes The Hair
All Over My Body Walk Around and Change Places… I’ll Bet it Does More Than That In
Person…LOL…
I checked out the light show in your photo blog as I waited for your page to load. My comments were short, conveying my first impressions. Didn’t know what I was looking at then, but I saw the elementals emerging right away. Luminescence is the word I was trying to remember, (thanks wesman) Fascinating… exciting…all the energy that is stored …the sparks, electricity, etc.
I was wondering why you said you would never do that with the naturals. What would happen if you rub or bang the natual ones? Also, do you have any fluorescent minerals in your collection? I beleive my selenite might have those properties but I need to get a black light to find out. If it is in the calcite family then it could glow.
I have a few really cool sites to share if you or anyone else want to message me. This one is cool because you can pass your cursor over the specimens and see the colors. http://mineral.galleries.com/minerals/property/fluoresc.htm
This one is helpful for photographing them… has a lot of tech info too.. http://www.uvminerals.org/photog.htm Let me know if you want more, “Sparky” :fun:
Try looking at the 2nd Luminescence upside down by turning it in your photo program. Tell me what you see. :goodjob:
curious that type of power…although it may seem at first unrelated I was reading about the newest technologie in hair dyers….in higher quality more expensive hair dryers the heating coils are made up of crushed tromaline gems…this creates ions that repel static flyaway on hair, helps seal in moisture, and helps hair dry without frizziness….among a longer list.
haha, im glad your enjoying it
I too wonder what would happen if the crysals were natural…..
